DIY Ramen at Home: How Do You Make Your Ramen? šŸœ

At Crafty Ramen, we’ve spent close to a decade absolutely obsessed with ramen. Truly, it’s been years of slurping, simmering, tasting, tweaking, and occasionally asking ourselves,Ā ā€œWhat would happen if we added… this?ā€

As much as we love the classics, (and trust us, we really do!) sometimes a bowl of comfort calls for a little adventure! That’s part of what makes ramen so great: it’s endlessly customizable! One person’s perfect bowl might look completely different from another’s, and that’s half the fun! So it got us thinking about the different ways to create ramen at home and all the ways you can make it your own!

Every bowl starts from the bottom up, with the warmest and most comforting part of the experience: the broth. The slurp-worthy foundation. šŸ˜‹ Over the years we’ve experimented with all kinds of broths like chicken, beef, and veggie, layering in flavours like sesame, miso, shoyu, and even yuzu. Some bowls are rich and savoury, while others are light and salty, but we’ve found that every broth has its own personality. The beauty of ramen is that there’s always another combination waiting to be discovered!

Of course, what’s ramen without the noodles? Technically still soup… but we think something pretty important would be missing! We’re partial to our classic scratch-made wheat noodles [tossed in olive oil,] but our gluten-free [rice] noodles are a close second to our favourites! Whether you reach for wheat, rice, soba, or something else entirely, noodles are what turn a good broth into a bowl that begs to be slurped!

Then comes the flavour magic: When we mix tare into hot stock at home, we tend to get a little experimental. Sometimes we carefully balance soy, onion, apples, mustard, or black beans to get just the right depth. Other times… we just see where curiosity takes us. Ramen has a funny way of rewarding bold ideas. šŸ˜‰

And toppings? That’s where things can get really interesting. Over the years we’ve seen everything from shredded ginger and fresh garlic to peanut butter and shredded cheese! Pineapple has even made an appearance in some bowls. It’s got us wondering, is it the next ramen staple or a hard pass? We’ll let you decide.

Of course, there will always be love for the classics: Green onions, sweet corn, bamboo shoots, and the ever-perfect marinated soft-boiled egg. 🤤 Or even earwood mushrooms or something a little unexpected like tomato paste; There’s always room for one more topping!

So now we’re curious: how do you make your ramen?

Are you a by-the-book ramen purist, or someone chasing the next big bowl of comfort? Either way, we’re always ready for the next great slurp. Slurps up! šŸ„
